Challenges & Conservation

Bank Swallow fledglings look on as a Bank Swallow flies by.

Once common across southern Ontario, Bank Swallow numbers have sharply declined, mainly due to habitat loss from human activities such as construction, agriculture, and riverbank stabilization. Protecting and restoring their natural habitats is essential for their survival.

Protection

Multiple Bank Swallows roost in front of several burrows.

Both the birds and their nesting habitats have been legally protected since 2014, making it illegal to harm, capture, or destroy them or their nests. Bank Swallow are protected under the Endangered Species Act, the Species at Risk Act, and the Migratory Birds Convention Act. Ongoing conservation efforts - including habitat protection and Recovery Plans - are crucial for healthy Bank Swallow populations return to Ontario's shores and waterways.

The Benefits of Artificial Habitats

To support Bank Swallow populations, Empire has constructed artificial nesting barrels, which are designed to mimic the natural nesting conditions of Bank Swallows. The barrels have been designed at three different heights, with a variety of spacing between structures, and with nesting holes facing different directions and foraging habitat.

These variations will help biologists learn more about the preferred habitat of Bank Swallows. This initiative is part of an Overall Benefit Plan under the Endangered Species Act to replace habitat loss and support the recovery of this threatened species.

These structures provide:

  • Safe Nesting Sites: Constructed with materials that replicate the texture and stability of natural banks, these habitats offer secure locations for nesting.

  • Increased Breeding Success: By providing ample nesting opportunities, artificial habitats can help boost breeding success and population numbers.

  • Educational Opportunities: These habitats serve as a living classroom, allowing visitors to observe and learn about the fascinating behaviours of Bank Swallows.

How You Can Help

  • Support Conservation Efforts: Participate in local conservation programs aimed at preserving their natural habitats.

  • Spread Awareness: Share your knowledge about Bank Swallows and the importance of their habitats with others.

  • Volunteer: Join us in monitoring the nesting structures for the Bank Swallow. Please report any sightings of the Bank Swallow to the Natural Heritage Information Centre and email SAROntario@ontario.ca
